Development Progress

Updated: Dec 5, 2023

Update: I have received feedback from my lecturer on my submitted essay so far. The content so far references well to my context which is a good thing. For further refinement, given advice was to somehow weave 1-2 sentences regarding the actual development process behind the artefact. Based on this, I will be leaving the actual refinement of the writing for last though I will still be documenting my thought and progress throughout the process. I would also need to make my writing more concise (and showing more links to my research perhaps) but is a work to be done at a later stage in development.

For now, I will be drawing ideas and concepts based on the inspirations gathered so far and perhaps more:

in this photo, I looked at generic composition and poses for human characters. As can be seen, there is a lot that could be done to play around with the 'style' of the composition. The piece could be as simple as procedural poses of an action like running; an array of similar shape (and perspective) but with different gestures/details; the people could be floating, falling, on the ground; dynamic.

I like this because well, it feels like anything can be interesting regardless of whether it is mundane, simple or dynamic. Personally speaking, it feels like there is a portrayal of personality and therefore life.

Building on the idea of compositions looks more at different possible approaches to the concept: more dynamic floating composition, more aesthetic procedural poses (and growth) with background text, more personality in 'less dynamic' standing poses, more environment and still-life with characters (relating to the character select screen). I find a great interest in the bottom left and right photos. It looks cool to me the different variations in actions that is shown to be visually possible or repeated even.

  • The bottom left offers possibilities for the doodles that surrounds the characters, and the filled-in colouring of the characters contrasting against the coloured outline of the doodles seems like a cool aesthetic.

  • The bottom right follows in a similar manner but the appeal is in the different portrayals of actions and poses, and the circled framing. The circle's styling makes the piece look all the more interesting and poses the piece more as its own aesthetic (rather than the initial medical influence that I gathered from a resemblance to Da Vinci's Vitruvian man).

These photos looked more towards the other details in the composition. I am currently having an interest in the graffiti style thanks to looking at the Mario Strikers Battle League photos, so I am keen on seeing what I can do with coloured ink splatters and a variety of shapes. It would make the piece more dynamic in my opinion.

I also searched for photos of the doodles in the background that could be done. There are a lot of different ways to approach the doodle aspect.

  • I like the top left which shows simple, compact squiggles with some in particular sharing the same colour.

  • bottom left shows how the different doodles can be colour-coded to present themselves accordingly with the respective coloured character, i.e blue doodles and the blue character against the other doodles being absent/black and white, yellow doodles and the yellow character..., etc.

  • The two pumpkin photos in the middle made me consider of incorporating both variations of outlines, coloured outlines and coloured doodles, and shifting the colouring to kind of 'shadow' the outline.

In this collection of photos, I looked at the aspect of "when" and considered calendars. I had ideas about including them with my drawings somehow but got stuck in considering how to portray it. My idea was to include a calendar motif, if you will, so that I could include like different dates to the characters, to resemble a gap between the MBTI personality type results that I tested for 'at the time'. The point was to include a difference in dates to signify growth, or rather change.

I would find it too shallow and misleading if I were to simply include the days of the week. Adding the days of the month, the month itself or the year would also lead to a similar result, so I have no idea how to progress this concept at this point. Perhaps I will discard this idea.

Despite this, the calendar images gives me inspiration for my approaches to the composition. The top left and the top right, in particular, carry a still-life influence to them, while the top right carries a unique structure that utilises colours and circles.

The bottom image gave me the idea of using sticky notes as an approach to a "stamping" aspect.

As an aside, the rightmost image was included because I suddenly had the idea of graffiti art being pasted within reality, as an image. This might be a cool idea to explore into for later.
