I have a lot of interest in particular areas, some being more shallow and some being more invested, though they are usually connected to each other in some way. I am not sure if my current sources for inspiration and reference are clear and established so I will take this time to explore and narrow down my ideas.
My current sources are: communication culture (with reference to internet culture), and aesthetic culture.
- this usage of the word 'culture' is based on the lecturer's clarification that it doesn't solely refer to the genealogical nature.
COMMUNICATION CULTURE
my first time in trying to communicate was about something I did not know. I was born 4 years old, according to my earliest memory. I woke up alone, in an 'unfamiliar' bedroom, familiarly navigating the 'unfamiliar' house up to the porch outside the door. I asked an elderly relative that loves me and I knew I love too, "mother? father? where are you?" Of course, this was in my native language, Filipino, and of course, I didn't know mother and father. what are they? who are they? and where can they be? It wasn't until shortly after within my explorative search that I found what I was looking for. This was the first time that I found and heard my voice, and learned how to speak as someone who lived in this world for 4 years so far;
"Kres", said mum. "Kres", said dad.
Kres Bosales. "Yes!". That is me. You see me, and I see you.
That is all I know, and all I needed.
I think of communication as something that carries character within it, full of soul, of emotions. We talk in meanings and concepts; the medium doesn't manner as long as there is a connected understanding.
For this reason, I find it interesting, fascinating even the way that people speak. "I am a mosaic of everyone I have ever known and loved", or something along those lines. More than wearing one's heart on their sleeves, everything about a person slips a bit about their identity. The way they walk, how they talk, how they behave. Just as how I can see them, they could see me. A few minutes of "conversation" tells a lot already.
Speaking less of semantics, communication in modern times often provides this appeal to me. Some examples are:
vibes
slang
colloquialism
internet texting and the overall conventions and use regarding them
memes
emojis
Some examples that display this in use are TikToks abridging awkwardness between strangers, references to particular Vine as a form of messaging, and memes being playfully used in its comedic nature. I do understand how this could be interpreted as to delving into Social Studies, Internet Culture and even Meme Culture, though my intention is focused more on the language as a medium of communication. This means that I would approach Communication Culture on how it delivers information, and how changes to its medium(s) can affect the information received.
