[WEEK 3] Analysis and Reflection

Question to self: If I can’t evoke the feeling of excitement from people looking at the concept art alone, then is doing so through animated sequences and audio achievable? Is it the same feeling of excitement? Why?

KEYWORDS: excitement, anime, cool, inspirational, dynamic

  • I want to create a feeling of awe and wonder, maybe even inspirational, from watching something uniquely, experientially new for the first time. It’s like the passion that people have in their childhood, of when they were kids- energetic, curious, active, whimsical, light-hearted, and easily entertained by cartoon shows such as Dragon Ball Z, Azumanga Daioh, and Nichijou.

    • If I were to describe it, they remind me of slice-of-life, thriller, action, shoujo and adventure genres; of cartoons, but more specifically anime. This is the idea that I wish to recreate through my work.

  • I like the idea of normal everyday people, unassuming and individual as they are, having the ability to be capable when the situation calls for it.

    • This can be simply any person one would see on the street- such as a quiet child going to school, an old lady selecting fruits at the market, a depressed middle-aged man walking his way to work, etc. - and then seeing a different side to them than what ‘normally’ appears

    • As it turns out, the child found a muddy puddle and goes to jump on it excitedly; as it turns out the old lady could cleverly bargain a cheaper yield without the seller knowing; as it turns out, the middle-aged man took out a skateboard so he could rush to work.

If I were to describe how I wish to approach these two ideas,  it would be that “cool is an impression, not a personality”, and what I find cool is in concept art (their designs, how and what they communicate) and in dynamic movement and action sequences- my fascination with the skill involved in the animation, and the immersion I get from the audiovisual elements.
