[WEEK 2] Progress Report

I reviewed over my work again and noticed that I (tentatively) chose my idea because it is the first and only idea that I have at the moment. So I decided to explore other ideas for the sake of exploring other possible ways I could approach my research question. So I decided to explore ideas that I would be interested in, something cool, interesting and would have dynamic combat and/or movement.

It’s listed under “without a ‘proper’ structure” as they are just random thoughts and concepts.

UPDATE: once I finished thinking of a lot of ideas/concepts, I grabbed some friends over and asked for their opinion on which ideas they found interesting, if any. I kind of limited the considered list down to those highlighted, and hoped that inputs from others would help give me an idea on what I would focus on next but I found them all interesting. So I decided to use all of them, and make loglines and taglines for them, for the sake of exploring what makes a concept interesting.

…and also because I came up with them with the idea of being able to animate dynamic sequences with them, if chosen.

Previously on Wednesday, when I was creating a list of concept ideas to explore, alternatives to the initial ‘main idea’, I was having a hard time trying to figure out the essentials- who, what, where, how- for the logline and tagline. This was from looking at those concepts as just ideas written on paper.

On Thursday, my feelings were still the same though I did work more on environmental concept designs for the ‘main idea’. On Friday, work showed a great improvement. I collected reference pics, moodboards if you will, for the respective ideas I had listed. I found out that the more I collected photos, the more I got inspired and found new ideas, fleshing out the idea more. This happened to most of the ideas but not all of them. Interestingly, the improved ideas were the “pool party”, “cosplay vs terrorists”, and “ping pong”, but not so much for the “player vs npc” and “handball”.

Moving forward to Sunday, I got the creative flow to write “player vs npc” and “handball” again, and surprisingly they were more developed than my other treatments. So after I wrote enough for the intro into the ideas, I rewrote and further developed the other treatments to be more developed. So at present, the other treatments are done but the treatment for the main idea is not yet developed. I intentionally wrote the treatments up until before the main action sequences, because those can be explored in more detail visually through thumbnails than in writing, in my opinion. I would also need to work on the ending but that can be done later. The aim is to finish the treatment, thumbnails and storyboard up by the end of week 4. Potentially an animatic too, and this is for ALL the six ideas I have at the moment. I am feeling motivated though I do feel restrained by my slow working speed.

Update: After a lot of talks with Lesley (lecturer), Ashley (T.A), and trying to clearly communicate what I would want to research, I kind of have a clearer idea of where to search. So I looked into these areas (though it was only preliminary and surface-level research, as previously done before):

  • “What is cool” (google scholar)

  • “Companion to film” (google scholar)

  • “Comedy in Anime” (google scholar)

  • “Shonen Genre Analysis” (google scholar)

  • “Appeal of Anime” (google scholar)
