[WEEK 18] Progress Report Part 2

Feedback for character design:

  • Possibly have zipper hoodie with dress shirt and tie.

  • Simplify pants design. Visually complex, which grabs attention and would be difficult to animate.

  • Simplify color scheme

  • The idea of a loosened tie over a hoodie raises interest and questions about the character.

  • Make sure there is enough value difference between character and environment, to make them distinct and separate.

I finally worked on gathering animation references. I enlisted the help of my peers for their acting and then edited the result in Premiere pro, so that it similarly matches the timing and spacing planned for the animation. In this respect, most of the shots had live-action references taken for, excluding those that are difficult to accomplish, i.e skateboarding as we don’t have the necessary skills. To overcome this I plan to look at video references online to help inform the action.

With the animation reference footage taken and edited, I am now able to start on animation. My next step in this regard is to do simple keys for each scene and then review them altogether.

I have also noticed that editing the live action reference footage acts as an ‘animatic’ in a way. I find it useful as it allows me to visualise what the animation could develop into, and enhance it with simple effects and supporting images. As such, I plan to use this approach to further refine my scenes in terms of cinematography and mise-en-scene, so that it is stronger narrative-wise and immersion-wise.

Summary:

-made progress on lights. Fixed weird overlap parts- adjusted base ramp, removed aiexposure and airadius (mostly), found the solution which was to fix the arnold (render) options under the light object.

-note: remember to do some thumbnails changing design of the hobby desk to something more…casual? Im thinking corkboards perhaps.

- note: gonna need a LOT of time and thought into finishing touch designs.

- fiddle with UV threshold(?) options for toon shader.

- experiment if test render shots can be overlapped with other colours to form easy colouring (monochrome base + overlay secondary colours of individual objects)

- try to finish character design and more concept work

- get a start on animation

- get a start on exegesis(!!!) and professional practice stuff.

Problems faced:

  • Initially tried to render shots with separate lights visible and see if experimenting with overlapping them and lowering opacity could achieve the effect that I want.

  • Noticed how I am getting different results between the viewport and arnold renderview - lights interact differently somehow.

Background Image render from Maya

Image coloured in FireAlpaca (drawing software)

  • I was unsure what colour to use for many of the other objects in the room at the time.

Adding Highlights and Shadows via uh Saturation and Contrast? Done by using the layer Overlay option with separate colour layers

Working on my own for this year-long project has been an interesting experience. I wanted to work on my own because I had ambitious ideas...
