This is my attempt at finding what aesthetic I would go for considering my options of either 2D or 3D.
I exported outlines of the 3D objects from Maya as a png, and I coloured around them in my go-to drawing software, FireAlpaca.
In the process of doing so I realised that I didn’t know what colours to use for the various objects/items around the room. I am out of my element in dealing with color theory, though I am particularly proud in how I rendered one of the ‘grass’ rug cushions in the bottom middle of the room. It was a nice level of quality, which as a shame since I wasn’t able to replicate anything similar except for the stair shelves and drawers.
Doing highlights is also bewildering to me as I need to consider lighting and shadows, which I haven't studied before. Plus this plays a strong part with colour theory which I am not quite experienced with to use proficiently.

I followed the advice given by a few of my peers and added a sort of shadow gradient to the walls, ceiling and floor. As can be seen applying this change enhances the lighting in the room making it feel more natural and picturesque in my opinion. More effort is needed on my part to figure out how to properly display the lighting, but as a sort of “pre-vis” of 2D animation background I think I satisfied with this quality of work.
Due to lack of design and arrangement I kept the supplementary items that would fill the space unfinished though.
Unfortunately, my considerations in giving the room a more “university dorm” feel didn’t translate well in the visuals. They were mostly covered (as shown in this shot), and provided problems during the rendering/conceptualisation. I would need to rethink how I would explore this approach, or if some settings of the animation would need to be adjusted.
Following off of this, I aim to simply do a few more tests with the 3D environment that I made, to see if it is usable as an environment behind a 2D character.
