[WEEK 13] Review

Reviewing my work and my animatic once again, I can see that there is a need to simplify things even further. This is because I am reminded once again that there isn’t a lot of leeway to show results that I like. If I were to critically analyse my work:

  • I cannot instinctively recognise where the lines are drawn between the beginning, middle and end. In addition to this, I find that I have a lot of scenes in my works, meaning that there wouldn’t be a lot of room to develop them further in the actual production. I would need to cut down and refine them.

  • I need to understand how to use dynamic scenes as a storytelling tool rather than adding them for the sake of it. While I did include them for the message and purpose of creativity, I just feel that the dynamic scenes and the cinematic (loosely being non-dynamic) scenes could generally use more improvement.

  • I would need to (re)work on the designs of the room so that it is an environmental storytelling tool.

I have been working on drawing concept art for now so I could explore designs. “What would the room look like? What kind of personality can be shown through it? What is the environment?” These are some of the questions that I have thought about while thinking of how to improve the storytelling aspect of my work, in an attempt to make the world in my story more real and organic.

I have found that choosing limitations helps me in this aspect as there are too many elements that can be changed around to explore a design. I have settled on having my main character be an art student, working in their university dorm room at night. They are passionate so they like to do activities that lets them express themselves, whether it be creatively in hobbies such as knitting, music, drawing, or energetically in sports such as baseball, basketball, etc. While I understand that there wouldn’t be enough time throughout the work to give the setting proper screen time, I would like to include these visible expressions of personality, which also helped me in designing other spaces in their room.

They are creative so they like to think outside of the box to make something appealing and functionally cool, which they did to be space-efficient with their bed. In this regard, I had the idea of personalising a space by making do with what is available. The bed does this with the limited university dorm room space but the desk does this with the standard desk design used in every room. They add objects and structures to adapt the space to themselves.

In the process of drawings these concept art I found that I have been unconsciously referencing my own room, which makes me feel more motivated to slowly figure out the aesthetic of my work- what they actually look like.

Reflection

Working on my own for this year-long project has been an interesting experience. I wanted to work on my own because I had ambitious ideas...

[WEEK 25] Progress Report

A lot of technical issues had arisen this time.  Created the maya scene for the poster by cutting out and moving elements from the dorm...
